Santa Clara, Calif. - On the final day of the Second Annual Bronco Invitational, the Santa Clara men's tennis team will be well-represented, as five of its members will be challenging for a championship title. Freshman and top-seeded Tommy Hicks easily rolled through the quarterfinals and semi-finals of the White Division to earn a spot in Sunday's final. He beat Casey McMakin of UC Davis in the quarterfinals by a score of 6-2, 6-4, and then came back to take out Ken Kao of Stanford in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2.
Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen got into the doubles finals of the Blue Division after beating Chris Rasmussen and Jon Wong of Stanford 8-4 in the semifinal round. In addition, Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields will compete in the finals of the Consolation Blue Division. They duo took out Portland's Darragh Rowan and Alex Strom in the first round 9-7, received a bye in the quarterfinals, and earned an 8-6 victory over California's Jiron Nakajima and Dean Wallace.
In other Santa Clara action, McQuaid fell in the quarterfinal round of the Blue Division to Stanford's Blake Muller 7-6, 6-3. In the consolation quarterfinals of the Blue Division, Bobby Rasmussen lost in a tight three sets to Juraid Hossain of Sacramento State, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. In the White Division Consolation round, Chris Iwamura retired his quarterfinal match due to illness, while Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Jeff Zellar of Stanford in the semifinals.
In doubles action, Brian Brogan and Hirakawa-Wong fell to California's Tore Deleuran and Eoin Heavey 8-4 in the semifinals of the Red Division, while Iwamura and Kerin were defeated in the quarterfinals in the same division by San Francisco's Andrew Hogan and Thong Tu 9-7.
