Santa Clara, Calif. - Tommy Hicks capped off a great tournament today, winning the White Division of the Bronco Invitational. The freshman out of Portland, Ore. defeated Henri Landes in straight sets at the Degheri Tennis Center, winning 7-5, 6-1. While Hicks was the only Bronco to capture a title, as the teams of Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen and Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields fell in their own respective finals, head coach George Husack was pleased with the overall effort of his players in the three-day tournament.
"I'm very happy how we competed this weekend," said Husack. "We certainly had many opportunities throughout the tournament, some which went our way and some that did not. In the heat of competition it may be tough to swallow not capitalizing on those opportunities but in the long run we're so much better for the experience."
Added Husack: "The tournament was great: the competition, the officiating and the weather. A lot of matches were played which is exactly what all coaches want for their players during the fall season."
Macek and Rasmussen competed for the doubles title in the main draw of the Blue Division, but fell to Cal's Ken Nakahara and John Pettit by a score of 9-8 (5). In addition, McQuaid and Shields reached the finals of the consolation doubles draw of the Blue Division, only to drop a close 8-6 decision to Stanford's Eric McKean and Blake Muller.
Santa Clara returns to action on October 21, when it hosts the five-day ITA Regional Championships at the Degheri Tennis Center.
