Eight Broncos Earn WCC Spring All-Academic Honors

June 26, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The West Coast Conference announced the 2007 WCC Spring All-Academic teams today and Santa Clara University had eight representatives. Senior Carl Bacon and junior Jeff Lombard (baseball), juniors Hilaire Fouts and Corey Utsurogi (women's golf), seniors Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen (men's tennis), senior Kim Daniel (women's tennis) and senior Katie Fahrer (women's crew) all earned spots on the team. For the 2006-07 academic year, 22 Broncos earned WCC All-Academic honors in 13 WCC-sponsored sports.

"Overall, this has been a fantastic year for Santa Clara student-athletes and these honors provide a nice finish to the 2006-07 year," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Dan Coonan. "We are proud of the efforts of these students and our honorees from the previous seasons as well. We are looking forward to another memorable year in 2007-08."

In baseball, Bacon and Lombard helped the Broncos earn a fourth-place finish in the WCC to wrap up Santa Clara's Commissioner's Cup victory. Bacon, who posted a 3.23 cumulative GPA in civil engineering, hit .332 for the year, while playing in all 56 games for the Broncos, and his game-winning hit against San Diego on May 13 clinched the Commissioner's Cup for SCU. He also posted 33 RBIs, 14 doubles and slugged .412. Lombard was one of the Broncos top relievers in 2007, while also earning a 3.33 GPA in finance. The Woodinville, Wash. Native appeared in 30 games and earned a team-high 10 saves on the year, striking out 34 batters in 37 2/3 innings.

Fouts and Utsurogi represented the Broncos in women's golf after having strong junior seasons for Polly Schulze's squad. Fouts was an All-WCC Honorable Mention selection after finishing 13th at the WCC Championships in April. She posted an 81.36 per round average this season. Utsurogi had sixth top 25 finishes this season and ended the year with an 80.50 scoring average.

Macek, a Zolling, Germany native, earned All-Academic honors for the second straight season. Playing every match but one at No. 1 singles, Macek put together a 12-15 record in duals, including a 4-4 mark in WCC play. He was named All-WCC Second Team in singles and doubles. Macek, who is pursuing an MBA at Santa Clara, finished the year a team-best 21-8 in doubles. Rasmussen, a Regis Jesuit High School (Colo.), graduate finished the spring season 15-6 for SCU (12-6 in duals) in singles and 20-9 in doubles. A finance major with a 3.52 GPA, Rasmussen clinched five wins for SCU and had an 18-11 overall record. Rasmussen has now been named WCC All-Academic three times (2005, 2006, 2007).

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Kim Daniel capped an excellent career at Santa Clara with WCC All-Academic honors for the second straight year. Daniel finished her career on a high note, going 10-8 in the dual season, including a 5-1 mark at No. 4 singles. She also clinched three of the team's eight victories this season. Daniel won 51 singles matches at SCU, putting her eighth all-time.

Fahrer picked up All-Academic honors for the first time in her career after playing an integral role in Santa Clara's second-place finish at the WCC Championships. The Broncos tied for second to equal the best finish in school history at the WCCs in April. Fahrer completed her excellent career as a member of the varsity by rowing in every race this spring. She posted a 3.21 GPA in psychology at SCU.
