DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis squad finished its weekend at the Aggie Invitational picking up five total wins highlighted by senior Tom Pham's quarterfinal win and semi-final appearance.
In the Round of 32, only Pham was able to secure a win. Ilya Osintsev lost to Toumas Manner of Saint Mary's 6-4, 6-1, while Eugene Muchynski dropped a hard-fought three-set match. Muchynski fought hard vs. the eventual champion, Gregory Bayane of Cal, but lost 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.
Pham picked up another win in the Round of 16 by defeating Brett Bacharach in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals. The senior, who won 23 matches last season on his way to All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention honors, downed Joakim Norstrom of Saint Mary's in an exciting quarterfinal match. Pham outlasted Norstrom 7-6(2) in the first set and finished the match by winning the second set 6-3.
After a great run, Pham lost in the semifinals to Jamin Ball of Stanford. Ball beat Pham 6-1, 6-3.
In consolations, Osintsev also fell to Ben Mirkin of Pacific, while Muchynski fell to Seif Elsherbini of Saint Mary's.
In doubles, Pham again was on the winning side. Pairing with Muchynski as the No. 2 seed in the tournment, Pham and Muchynski won their first match 8-3. However, in the quarterfinals, the Bronco tandem lost a heartbreaking match to Andrew Poutsie and Moez Chargui of Nevada. The Nevada duo outlasted Pham and Muchynski 9-8(4).
The Broncos return to action Oct. 19 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Regional Championships.
