No. 37 Bronco Men's Tennis Rolls 6-1 Over UC Santa Barbara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After winning two matches on Saturday, the No. 37 Bronco men's tennis team continued building momentum, this time winning 6-1 over No. 70 UC Santa Barbara in a chilly contest at the Degheri Tennis Center on President's Day. Santa Clara improved its record to 8-3 (0-1 WCC), and it has now won all five matches at home and five of its last six matches overall.

"I really liked the way we came out in singles and dominated after losing the doubles point," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "I thought our focus was unbelievable in every singles match."

Despite losing the doubles point, Santa Clara rebounded strongly by sweeping the singles matches in impressive fashion. No Bronco dropped more than six games and only one set was as close as 6-4.

In the top spot, No. 69 John Lamble was a 6-2, 6-3 winner, moving him back above .500 at 10-9 overall. Ilya Osintsev rolled 6-2, 6-1 which put him in double-digit wins as well (10-4). Osintsev has a six match winning streak and hasn't lost since falling to No. 50 Vlad Stefan of No. 21 Michigan on Jan. 25.

At No. 3, Matt Kecki recorded a 6-3, 6-3 final which boosted him to 7-1 in dual matches (only loss to No. 21 Michigan). Two days after breaking the all-time record for wins Tom Pham was a straight-set winner, giving him 76 wins for his Santa Clara career. Pham leads the team with 13 wins (13-5 overall).

At No. 5, Ashot Khacharyan improved to 8-1 (only loss to No. 23 Michigan) with a 6-3, 6-2 final. Khacharyan has won six consecutive matches after shutting down UCSB. Eugene Muchysnki won his third match in four tries with a 6-1, 6-4 final.

The Broncos will have next weekend off before traveling to Saint Mary's on Fri., March 1 to face the Gaels at 3 pm. Their next home match is scheduled for Sun., March 3 against UC Irvine at 11 am.
