SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Bronco men's tennis team came through with a big 4-3 victory over Furman University on Wednesday for their second consecutive win and fifth in their last six matches. Santa Clara reached double digit wins on the season and it is now 10-4 overall. The Broncos remain an impressive 7-0 on their home courts and hung tough to secure to the win despite missing several starters.
This weekend, Santa Clara will host University of the Pacific on Saturday at 11 am. The Broncos will welcome Northern Arizona to town on Sunday at 11 am.
"I was so proud of my team today showing the mental toughness to overcome our team missing several starters from today's lineup," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "I can't say enough about our focus and determination."
The Broncos got the match started with strong performances from their top two doubles teams. At No. 1, John Lamble and Tom Pham teamed up for an 8-3 win, showing good chemistry in their first match together this season. In the second spot, freshman Ashot Khacharyan and Tomasz Soltyka battled, ultimately picking up the match in a tiebreaker. The doubles point turned out to be the difference maker as the teams split singles, 3-3.
In the singles portion, the Broncos' top three players all played tough and came out with decisive wins. Lamble, ranked No. 66 in the country, turned in a 6-3, 6-3 final which clinched the Broncos' win and moved his winning streak to six games (13-9 overall).
Khacharyan was solid, recording a 6-2, 6-3 victory for his 10th win of the season (10-2 overall). Pham, the shortest member of the Bronco team at 5-5, topped his 6-9 Furman opponent 6-2, 6-3 for his team-leading 15th win of the season.
The Broncos have come through with 4-3 wins in their last two matches and will look to continue their momentum at home with two more key matchups this weekend.
