No. 56 Bronco Men's Tennis Falls to No. 43 San Diego State; Faces No. 42 USD on Sunday

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 56 Bronco men's tennis team fell 7-0 at No. 43 San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday. After a practice day Saturday, the Broncos will take on No. 37 San Diego on Sunday in the second and final match of the road trip. The teams are scheduled to begin play at 3 pm at the Hogan Tennis Center.

Santa Clara is 13-8 overall and 1-3 in WCC matches. The Broncos are 10-3 on their home courts, 1-4 on the road and 2-1 in neutral contests. San Diego State improved to 14-7 overall and 7-4 at home with the win.

The doubles point was a nail-biter that came down to a tiebreak at No. 2; however, San Diego State edged Santa Clara to pick up the early advantage in the match. After the Aztecs jumped ahead with an 8-2 win in the third spot, the Broncos answered with a big 9-8 victory by John Lamble and Ilya Osintsev at No. 1. Matt Kecki and Tomasz Soltyka battled until the end at No. 2, but couldn't pull out the tiebreaker in their first match together.

San Diego State rode its momentum into singles, finishing out the match strongly for the sweep. First to finish was No. 2 singles, where the Aztecs triumphed 6-2, 6-2. They picked up their third win at No. 4, recording a 6-3, 6-1 final. San Diego State clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5, and went ahead 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the top position.

Two Bronco seniors fought hard in three-set matches. At No. 3, Kecki won the first set 7-5 and took the second set to a tiebreaker. San Diego State hung tough, however, winning both the second set tiebreaker as well as the third-set tiebreaker. Eugene Muchynski, playing in the sixth position, battled after dropping the first set but ultimately fell 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
