Lamble Falls in Singles and Doubles Quarterfinals at ITA Regionals

MORAGA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's tennis team finished Day 4 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Regional on Monday. The Broncos' run at the tournament came to a halt today after dropping both of their quarterfinal matches.

Senior John Lamble came out strong today against Max Manthou of the University of Washington, before losing 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Manthou, the tournament's No. 9 seed, defeated the tournament's No. 5 seed, Nolan Paige of Stanford, en route to his showdown with the Broncos No. 1 singles player.

In order to reach the quarterfinals, Lamble defeated Sacramento State's Tom Miller 6-1, 6-4, Cal's Mads Engsted 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and then snuck by James Tallman of USF 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lamble, the nation's 64th ranked singles player, wraps up his fall season at 7-4.

Sam Bertram, a native of Australia and the newest member of the Broncos squad, did a fine job filling in for the injured Ilya Osintsev as Lamble's doubles partner. After receiving a bye into the second round, the Bronco tandem defeated Sam Bloore and Thomas Hunt of St. Mary's 8-5. In the third round, the Bronco pair defeated Sacramento State's Marek Marksoo and Tom Miller.

Today in the men's doubles quarterfinals, Lamble and Bertram were ousted 8-5 by Stanford's team of John Morrissey and Yale Goldberg. Morrissey, the 34th ranked singles player in the country, has been a tough doubles opponent with freshman partner Goldberg.

This concludes the fall season for the Broncos, who will next take the court on January 18th at home versus UC Davis.
