SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 74 Bronco men's tennis team turned in an outstanding performance on Thursday, beating the visiting No. 57 San Diego State Aztecs. The Broncos were firing on all cylinders and won the match 6-1, extending their winning streak to five consecutive matches. They also snapped San Diego State's run of three straight wins, which included a 6-1 defeat of No. 66 BYU.

In its next match, Santa Clara will face another ranked opponent. The Broncos are set to take on No. 69 New Mexico on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 11am.

Santa Clara's record is now 6-1 overall on the 2014 season. The team is a perfect 5-0 on its home courts, is 0-1 on the road, and is 1-0 in neutral site matches. Santa Clara has a 2-1 mark against ranked opponents, with its only loss of the season against No. 4 USC, and its other win over a ranked team coming 4-0 over No. 64 Georgia State.

Santa Clara is on its longest winning streak since the 2012 squad, which made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, reeled off eight consecutive victories. The Broncos are also off to their best start in the last decade.

Against the Aztecs on Thursday, Santa Clara rode several clutch performances for the win, starting out with the doubles point. San Diego State began well by taking the second doubles position, 8-3, snapping Sam Bertram and Ashot Khacharyan's perfect 4-0 dual match record.

The Broncos rallied to tie, however, with Mikheil Khmiadashvili and Jesse Ross earning a win, 8-6, at No. 3. The freshman duo is now 3-3 on the season.

The righty-lefty tandem of John Lamble and Ilya Osintsev finished the job at No. 1, pulling out their match in a tiebreaker by an 8-7 (5) final. In addition to clinching the doubles point, they continued their unbeaten streak during the dual match season, and now have a 5-0 record.

The Broncos have now won every doubles point except against No. 4 USC, and they are a perfect 6-0 when winning the doubles point.

In singles, Santa Clara recorded three straight-set victories and two three-set wins to down the Aztecs. Khacharyan, playing in the third singles spot, topped #124 Freddy Gelbrich 6-2, 6-3 and was first to finish. The sophomore took home his fifth straight win and is 7-2 in dual matches.

Khmiadashvili was a straight-set winner as well, defeating Hendrik Jebens 6-4, 6-3. The native of Tbilisi, Georgia picked up his third win in a row and is 3-2.

Bertram went to a tiebreaker with Milen Ianakiev in the first set, coming through with the victory. After the tight start to the match, Bertram pulled away with a 6-1 second set to clinch the Bronco win. Bertram, a native Australian, is 6-2 in his first season with the Broncos and is 3-0 during the regular season.

With the contest already decided, the Broncos finished up with two more wins. Osintsev had a tough battle in the second spot, splitting sets with Hunter Nicholas 6-3 and 3-6, before pulling out the tiebreaker. His record stands at 8-2 overall including the fall and 4-0 during the regular season. Osintsev's tiebreaker victory gave the Broncos a perfect 3-0 record in tiebreakers for the match.

Lamble dominated in the first set 6-1 before dropping the second 3-6 to Thorsten Bertsch. The senior rallied brilliantly, coming back for another 6-1 win in the decisive set. The Saratoga native is 12-3 overall and has an exceptional 5-0 mark in dual matches.

San Diego State avoided the sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, as Maxi Boewer-Stelter topped Jesse Ross.
