Khacharyan Advances To ITA Northwest Regional Championship Semi-Finals

Santa Clara junior Ashot Khacharyan (Sochi, Russia) advanced to the semi-finals of the ITA Men's Northwest Regional Championship with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory Sunday afternoon over No. 5 Sem Verbeek of Pacific.  Khacharyan entered the tournament as the No. 17 seed.

Khacharyan will play Alvaro Nazal of Gonzaga at 11 am on Monday. The winner will advance to the finals on Tuesday.  The winner of the Northwest Regional advances to New York City for the ITA National Indoor Championship.  The 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships is at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Nov. 6-9.

"Ashot is really playing his best tennis since he has gotten to Santa Clara," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills.  "He is very motivated and you can tell in his play."

On Saturday Khacharyan defeated the No. 2 seed, Maciek Romanowicz of Stanford, 6-2, 6-2.  He defeated Jake Douglas of Washington, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, later in the afternoon.

On Friday he defeated Kasparas Zemaitelis of Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-2, and Wyatt Houghton of Cal, 6-2, 6-1.
