SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of the Bronco Weekly Sports Wrap, SCU student-athletes Denzel Johnson and Nici Gilday give the latest on men's and women's basketball as they continue WCC play and recap a successful Saturday start to the season for men's tennis.

Led by No. 1 singles player Ashot Khacharyan and No. 2 singles Ilya Osintsev, men's tennis defeated US Santa Cruz and Sonoma State — both by scores of 4-0 — last Saturday at the Degheri Tennis Center. EYEBRONCO caught up with senior Sam Bertram to talk about the season openers. The Broncos face UNC Wilmington and USC this upcoming Saturday and Sunday in week two of the season.

Men's basketball earned a nonconference victory over St. Katherine last Tuesday before beating Bay Area rival USF, 70-64 on Saturday to make it two home wins on the week. EYEBRONCO spoke with head coach Kerry Keating and senior guard Brandon Clark after the win over the Dons. The Broncos play Thursday against LMU at 8 p.m. and Saturday against Pepperdine at 8 p.m. Both games will be held in the Leavey Center.

Looking to rebound from a loss at USF, women's basketball plays at LMU Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Pepperdine Saturday at 12 p.m.

Softball begins its 2015 campaign on Feb. 6, and Gilday sat down with senior catcher Breezy Bernard to talk about the upcoming season.

Women's tennis opens the spring schedule with a Saturday doubleheader; the team takes on the Academy of Art at 10 a.m. and Sonoma State at 2 p.m.

Sofia Huerta was selected with the 11th overall pick in last Friday's NWSL Draft. She joins former teammate and Santa Clara Bronco Julie Johnston as a member of the Chicago Red Stars. EYEBRONCO reporter David Gentile spoke with Huerta about draft day and reuniting the collegiate Broncos at the next level.
