SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After knocking off the Gaels from Saint Mary's College yesterday afternoon, the Broncos were unable to maintain their winning momentum, falling today to the Tigers from the University of the Pacific by a score of 5-2.
Santa Clara grabbed an early advantage by taking the doubles point but were eventually bested in five out of the six singles matches.
After the loss, Santa Clara drops to 6-12 on the season and 1-6 in West Coast Conference play. The Broncos will have two full days of recovery before they return to the Degheri Tennis Center on Wednesday to take on the Hornets from California State University, Sacramento.
Continuing to play at the No. 1 doubles position, Sam Bertram and Ilya Osintsev grabbed their second straight win and seventh victory of the season with a 6-4 win over Jose Chamba and Miguel Diaz. The Eastern European pairing of Ashot Khacharyan and Mikheil Khmiadashvili also found the winning column to get back to their winning ways after a closely-contested 7-5 victory on Court 2, locking up the doubles point for the Broncos.
Santa Clara's early match success was halted in the singles portion of the match. Alex Hamilton evened his overall singles record at the No. 2 singles spot with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (5) victory over Khacharyan, ending the junior's four-match winning streak. Chamba kept the Tigers rolling with a 6-2, 6-3 result against Khmiadashvili on Court 3. With one more singles victory needed, Bernardo Oliveira helped the Tigers clinch their fifth WCC victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Sebastien Mathieu.
The lone bright spot for Santa Clara in singles play came from senior Sam Bertram. Competing against Daniel Alameh, the Aussie gutted out a 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (9) win to finish weekend play with an undefeated record.
