Men’s Tennis Wraps up Regular Season Play with Two Home Matches

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team will look to continue its winning ways this weekend when it hosts Gonzaga University and the University of Portland for its final regular season matches of the spring season.

The Broncos will welcome the Bulldogs from Gonzaga on Saturday at noon for Santa Clara's Senior Day matchup and will follow with another match at noon against the Pilots on Sunday to wrap up West Coast Conference play for 2015.

Over the past 10 years, Santa Clara has held a commanding advantage these two programs from the Pacific Northwest. The Broncos have won nine out of the last 11 meetings against Gonzaga, including seven straight matches against their WCC rivals. During that same time span, the Broncos have also fared well against Portland, winning five out of the last six matches.

The Broncos

Santa Clara enters this weekend's action with a 7-12 record overall and 1-6 mark in conference play. Winners of two out of their last three matches, the Broncos are on a bit of run as of late, recently taking down California State University, Sacramento on Wednesday by a score of 4-3.

Ilya Osintsev, who will be honored for his dedication to the program over the last four years during the Senior Day festivities on Saturday, continues to lead the squad at the No. 1 singles position. Sitting at 13-6 on the year, the lefty has comfortably taken care of business in recent time, winning six out of his last seven matches. Over the course of his Bronco career, Osintsev is 3-1 against Gonzaga, including victories over current Bulldogs Vladimir Mijatovic and Hayden Smith. The senior is also undefeated against Portland opponents.

Ashot Khacharyan, settling in at the No. 2 position, leads the squad with 17 singles victories on the year and has also found his form as of late, capturing a win in five out his last six matches. Last year, Khacharyan fell against Portland but responded to take his match against Gonzaga.

Playing No. 3 singles, Mikheil Khmiadashvili is even at 8-8 on the season but is currently suffering through a five-match losing skid. The sophomore will look to respond this weekend against the Bulldogs and Pilots, two squads that he swept last year in regular season play.

Sam Bertram, the other senior who will be honored this Saturday, is 9-11 on the year and 8-8 in dual match play competing primarily at the No. 4 spot. Last season, the Aussie lost to Portland but rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 rout of Gonzaga's Vicente Varas.

In the final two singles positions, Max Heerinckx will look to contribute to a Bronco victory and Sebastien Mathieu will aim for his second consecutive victory after rolling to a win against Sacramento State during his last time out on the court.

In doubles, all three Bronco pairings will look to continue their winning ways after sweeping the doubles point on Wednesday. The senior duo of Bertram and Osintsev lead the squad with eight victories and are currently riding a three-match winning streak. Next door, Khacharyan and Khmiadashvili, also winners of three-straight, have five wins on the season. Finally, Heerinckx and Standifer come into this weekend's action with a record of 3-4 competing at the No. 3 spot and are fresh off a victory over Sacramento State.

Gonzaga

The Zags enter this weekend's final round of WCC action with a 10-8 record overall and 2-5 mark in conference play. Competing away from home, Gonzaga comes in winless at 0-4.

Before travelling to the Degheri Tennis Center on Saturday, Gonzaga will take on the University of San Francisco just up the road in the city by the bay on Friday.

In its last five outings, Gonzaga has just one win, a tight 4-3 victory over Brigham Young University. Following that win, the Bulldogs fell to the WCC-leading and nationally ranked Toreros from the University of San Diego by a score of 6-1.

Alvaro Nazal, the team-leader with 25 singles victories on the year, paves the way for the Bulldogs at the No. 1 singles position. The redshirt-junior is 11-6 while playing at the top singles spot but recently fell 7-5, 7-5 to USD's Uros Petronijevic.

Nick Kamisar, Gonzaga's lone victor competing against the Toreros, is 18-9 on the year and 9-6 while assuming responsibility of the No. 2 doubles spot.

Playing No. 3 singles is junior Hayden Smith. After tallying a 4-15 mark as a sophomore last season, the junior has turned it around in 2015, capturing 14 wins overall and nine victories at the third spot in Gonzaga's lineup. Vladimir Mijatovic has also provided consistent performances at the No. 4 spot, racking up 10 victories in dual match play.

The final two singles positions have been primarily handled by Sergio Chip and Vicente Varas. Playing at the No. 5 spot, Chip is 6-11 at that spot but just 2-8 in his last 10 matches. Varas, rounding out the Bulldog lineup, has also sputtered as of late, falling in his last seven outings and only claiming one victory in his 10 matches.

Smith and Mijatovic combine in doubles to lead Gonzaga at the No. 1 position. The tandem is 8-5 in dual match play but is currently suffering through a three-match losing skid. Nazal and Kamisar have carried the load right next door on Court 2. The duo has a team-high 14 wins playing together this year and is undefeated in its last three outings. In the final doubles position, five different Bulldog duos have been assembled over the course of the season, combining for seven wins and 11 losses.

Portland

Ranked No. 64 in the nation and second in the WCC, the Pilots enter this weekend's final two conference matches with a 12-5 record overall and 3-3 mark competing on the road. The Pilots are 3-1 in their last four matches, most recently taking down BYU handily, 5-1.

Portland will also travel to play USF before visiting the Mission Campus on Sunday for the WCC finale.

Steffen Dierauf, a 6-foot, 4-inch senior, highlights Portland's roster at the top of the singles lineup. Dierauf boasts a record of 11-5 overall but has recently fallen in his last two matches. Reid DeLaubenfels is 3-4 while playing at the No. 2 spot this season but has also struggled as of late, capturing just two wins in his last eight matches. Michail Pervolarkis, standing at 6-foot, 5-inches tall, has contributed to Portland's successes this season with his 11-4 record overall and 5-3 mark while playing No. 3 singles.

In recent time, the Pilots have shifted around the backend of their singles lineup. Pierre Garcia, splitting time at the No. 4 and 5 spots, has tallied five wins in a row and is 7-1 in his last eight matches.

In doubles, Dierauf and DeLaubenfels are close to perfect competing at the No. 1 position. The senior pairing is 10-2 overall and 4-1 in conference action. The other two doubles spots have not warranted as much consistency, but have racked up victories at times. Competing against BYU last weekend, the Garcia pairing of Matthew and Pierre played together at the No. 2 spot, cruising past their Cougar opponents by a score of 6-1. In the final doubles position, five different Pilot pairings have laced it up on Court 3, combining for four wins and eight losses.
