SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Competing against the No. 17-ranked squad in the country Tuesday afternoon, the Santa Clara men's tennis team was unable to pull off its second consecutive victory against a ranked opponent, falling 4-0 to Stanford University (5-1).

Santa Clara (3-1) fought in the doubles portion of the match but was outlasted in the end. Down 1-0 in the early going, the Broncos were unable to make a comeback in singles, dropping three matches in straight set fashion.

"Credit to Stanford for playing well today," said Head Coach Derek Mills. "They were the better team today. We'll have to learn from this experience and move on to getting ready for our next match."

At the No. 2 doubles position, Robert Seby and Connor Garnett's three match winning streak was cut short after losing 6-3 to Stanford's Tom Fawcett and Sameer Kumar. Shortly thereafter, Kamran Khan and Jeffrey Liang were upended by a score of 6-4 competing against Michael Genender and Yale Goldberg, granting Stanford the early advantage.

In singles, Santa Clara's leader with six victories, Garnett, suffered his second defeat of the year, falling 6-0, 6-0 against Kumar. On Court 1, Fawcett, the No. 9 ranked played in the country handed Santa Clara's Ashot Khacharyan his second straight defeat, a 6-2, 6-3 result. With one more point needed to clinch the match, Genender, ranked No. 61 in the nation, handled Khan 6-3, 6-3 to give the Cardinal their fifth victory of the season.

The Broncos will look to rebound when they hit the courts this weekend in Boise, Idaho. Santa Clara and Boise State University are set to begin play at noon this Sunday, Feb. 7.
