SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With a young and promising team returning, Santa Clara men's tennis announced its 2016-17 schedule on Wednesday. The Broncos will host 14 matches in the spring at Degheri Tennis Center and face nine opponents who were ranked in the final 2015-16 International Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
The squad commences competition in the fall at UC Davis' Aggie Invitational on Sept. 30 – Oct. 2. Following that, the team will compete at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkeley, California, on Oct. 13 – 17. The fall slate concludes with the St. Mary's Invitational on Oct. 28 – 30 in Moraga, California.
The first three matches in 2017 will be at home for SCU, beginning with UC Santa Cruz on Jan. 20. SCU then heads to Louisiana to face two opponents that were ranked at the end of 2015-16. The squad opens with LSU on Feb. 3, a team that finished last season ranked 35th in the country. On Feb. 5, Santa Clara plays Tulane, a squad that ended last year ranked 31st. The next four matches will be at home, highlighted by Boise State on Feb. 19. BSU was the 55th in the country at the end of 2016.
West Coast Conference action begins for the Broncos on March 4 at BYU, which finished last season at No. 61 in the country. The team then faces two nonconference opponents at home before hosting WCC opponents Portland on March 25, the No. 74 team in the country to end 2015-16, and Gonzaga the following day.
SCU goes on the road to face Pacific on March 31 and St. Mary's on April 1. Pacific was ranked 70th in the nation to end last year. The team then closes out league play with three-straight home matches, two of which are against opponents that were in the final 2015-16 ITA rankings. The Broncos host Pepperdine on April 7 and Loyola Marymount on April 8, both of which were ranked in the top 70 to end the season. The final home match of the season will take place on April 15 against San Francisco.
The squad ends the regular season on the road at San Diego State on April 21 and at San Diego, the 29th-ranked team in the country last year, on April 23.
Suiting up an almost entirely freshmen-loaded lineup during the 2015-16 campaign, the Santa Clara men's tennis team found flashes of success and moments of promise leading to a 10-13 finish.
The West Coast Conference Championships will be held in Claremont, California, at Claremont McKenna College on April 27-29.
