MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis wrapped up the 2016 fall season in Moraga, California, on Saturday at the Saint Mary's Invitational. The Broncos won three sections on Saturday, including sophomore Andrew Gu who won a singles and doubles section. Originally planned to take place Friday-Sunday, the tournament was played exclusively on Saturday due to rain in the forecast.
The competition was split into numerous four-player sections. Gu won his semifinal matchup over Ross Watson (Pacific), 6-2, 6-2, and then took care of business in the final as well, defeating Louis Chabut (Sacramento State), 6-2, 6-2. Gu then teamed up with freshman Vasileios Iliopoulos in doubles play and the duo won their semifinal match over Max Pham and Jesse Ross (UC Davis), 7-5. In the final, the Broncos won, 6-2, over Ryan Cardiff and Connor Heap (California).
Sophomore Kamran Khan and freshman Jesus Tapiador Barajas also won their doubles section, defeating Nathan Hampton and Lance Ngo (Pacific) in the semifinal, 6-3. Their 7-5 victory in the final came over Hugo Colpart and Matt Halligan (Holy Names).
The Broncos open the spring season at home with three-straight matches at the Degheri Tennis Center on Jan. 20-22.
