PROVO, Utah – Santa Clara men's tennis lost to BYU on Saturday night by a score of 4-2 and saw its four match-winning streak come to an end.
The Broncos (8-2, 0-1 WCC) dropped the doubles point for the second straight match but were unable to comeback for the victory like they did on Friday at Weber State and three other times before. Sophomore Robert Seby and freshman Jesus Tapiador Barajas lost on court one, 6-2. Sophomores Andrew Gu and Kamran Khan fell on court three by a score of 6-4 to decide the point.
BYU (9-7, 2-0 WCC) won the first two singles matches on courts one and four but SCU did not give up despite being down 3-0. Sophomore Connor Garnett earned his fifth straight singles win and improved to 9-1 on court three during dual match play. He defeated Jeremy Bourgeios, 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 to give SCU its first point. Shortly after that, Gu won on court two by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 for his fourth-straight singles win. He now boasts a 7-2 record during dual match play on the year.
BYU went on to win court five to secure the victory and was winning on court six when the match was called.
Santa Clara returns to action on March 15 when they host Army West Point at 3 p.m. PT.
