Men’s Tennis to Face Fresno State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis ended its 11-day stretch without a match by picking up a 6-1 win over Army West Point on Wednesday. The squad will now host Fresno State on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT at Degheri Tennis Center.

"I think it's always good to get some time away from the court," head coach Niall Angus said. "To recover a little bit is good but at the same time that can be also be very dangerous. We have to make sure we get back to training this week and have a good couple of days before Army and prepare the guys like they have been all season."

The Broncos enter the weekend with a record of 9-2 overall and 0-1 in West Coast Conference action. Their first loss of the year was at Tulane (Feb. 5), the No. 25 team in latest Division I Men's National Team Oracle/ITA Collegiate Rankings. The second loss came in their most recent match at BYU in the league-opening match when they fell 4-2. That defeat snapped a four-match winning streak for the squad.

"I'm hoping to see a continued commitment to competing," Angus said. "We've had that all season, there hasn't been a match that we haven't given everything. The major thing is getting back on the court and being back at home. We're at our best outdoors and we're looking to start up another run here."

SCU lost the doubles point in its last two matches. The team was able to overcome it in their 4-2 win at Weber State (March 3) but not at BYU. Overall, the Broncos have lost the doubles point six times this year and come back to win the match on four occasions.

"We've been working hard to try and find a solution to not getting these doubles points," Angus said. "We're going to try and come up trumps in the doubles against both Army and Fresno State."

Sophomore Robert Seby boasts an 8-7 singles record for the year and has six of his last 10 matches. He is 6-3 on court one for the Broncos in dual match play. Sophomore Andrew Gu is 5-3 playing on court two and has won seven of his last 10 matches including four in a row. Sophomore Connor Garnett has gone 9-1 in his last 10 matches, 9-1 on court three to start dual match play and has won five straight matches.

Freshman Jesus Tapiador Barajas owns a 4-4 record on court four for SCU. Freshman Vasileios Iliopoulos is 6-2 in match play (1-0 on court four and 5-2 on court five), including the clinching win for the Broncos at LSU (Feb. 3). Kamran Khan is 1-0 on court five this year and 4-1 on court six.

Fresno State is 8-7 this season and has won two of its last five matches, defeating New Mexico and Pacific but falling to UC Davis, Wichita State and Pacific in a rematch.
