Men’s Tennis Has Solid Opening Day at Aggie Invitational

DAVIS, Calif. – Playing in its first event of the season, Santa Clara men's tennis had an impressive opening day at the Aggie Invitational, which is being held at UC Davis.

On Friday, the Broncos won seven of eight singles matches and claimed victories in five doubles matchups in the non team-scored three-day tournament that features players from Nevada, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State, Pacific, San Francisco, Stanford, Cal, Gonzaga, Portland and the host Aggies in three singles draws and two in doubles.

All eight members of the Santa Clara roster were in action with Robert Seby, the No. 3 seed in the A draw, defeating Robert Krutik of Saint Mary's 7-5, 6-2 and seventh-seeded Connor Garnett in the same bracket outlasting Paul Girard of San Francisco 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.

Kamran Khan, seeded sixth in the B draw, dispatched Calvin Jordaan of Saint Mary's 6-2, 6-4.

Vasileios Iliopoulos and Jesus Tapiador Barajas scored an upset in the doubles A draw by knocking off top-seeded Dominic Barretto and Paul Barretto of California 8-5.

Seeded No. 1 in the B draw, Khan and Seby downed Louis Chabut and Bernardo Moraes of Sacramento State 8-5.

Khan and Seby advanced to the semis by downing teammates Max Heerinckx and Sebastien Mathieu in the quarterfinals 8-7(2).

Action begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Mayra Welch Tennis Center.
