STOCKTON, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis advanced four players to the round of 32 in day one of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships to wrap up a successful day on the courts of Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
In a 128 player draw, juniors Robert Seby, Connor Garnett, Kamran Khan and sophomore Jesus Tapiador Barajas each won a pair of matches Thursday to advance to the round of 32.
Seby defeated Sacramento State's Louis Chabut, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 128 before deposing Emilio Moreno of Gonzaga in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Seby will next play the number one seed player in the tournament, Billy Griffith of Cal, on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Garnett won both his matches in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 against Washington's Seb Hawken and 7-6(4), 7-6(4) against Tommy Edwards of Portland State. Garnett will get an opportunity to play against Oregon's Akihiro Tanaka, the number four seed in the tournament on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Khan took care of the 15th seeded Cormac Clissold of Oregon, 7-5, 6-4, and Sacramento State's Bernardo Moraes, 6-7(6), 6-0, 6-2. Khan will next play Portland's Carlos Donat on Friday at 2 p.m.
Barajas won 6-1, 6-3 over UC Davis' Ivan Thamma followed by ninth seed Enzo Sommer of Washington, 7-5, 6-2 Ret (inj). Barajas will play at 2 p.m. on Friday against Portland State's Nathan Boniel.
Junior Andrew Gu also picked up a win for the Broncos before losing to sixth seed Sameer Kumar of Stanford, 6-7(4), 7-5, 2-6.
Day two of the championships on Friday includes the doubles portion in the morning followed by the continuation of singles play in the afternoon.
