Men’s Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader Matches
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis improved its dual match record to 3-2 with a pair of 7-0 shutout wins against Holy Names and Sonoma State on Saturday at Degheri Tennis Center.

Santa Clara 7 – Holy Names 0

In the morning match, Santa Clara (2-2) swept Holy Names, 7-0, without dropping a set on any of the courts.  Vasileios Iliopoulos playing on court four picked up the clinching point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Javier Luque.

"The team's energy was good as it was important to start off the right way coming off the losses we had in the East Coast Challenge last week," said Broncos head coach Niall Angus.  "It can be difficult when you are expected to win but the players stayed focus and Seb (Mathieu) did a nice job getting his first win this season."

Sebastien Mathieu earned the first singles point for the Broncos beating 6-1, 6-0, playing on court six.

Santa Clara 7 – Sonoma State 0

In the afternoon match against the Seawolves of Sonoma State, the Broncos (3-2) picked up right where they left off, dropping only a single set en route to a 7-0 win.

"Sonoma State is much improved and we matched their energy in doubles.  We got off to a great start in singles with Jesus (Tapiador Barajas) and Vas (Iliopoulos) only dropping a game between them to get us two quick points," said Angus.  "We put our foot to the pedal and kept it there the entire day.  We had a good start to our outdoor season today and we're looking forward to playing UC Santa Cruz tomorrow."

Iliopoulos cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Igor Pissarenko from the number four spot.  For the two matches on the day, the Athens, Greece native dropped only two games.

Santa Clara continues its home stand on Sunday, playing UC Santa Cruz at 10 a.m. PT.
