FRESNO, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis lost 6-1 to Fresno State on the road ending its eight match win streak. The Broncos (8-3) last loss came nearly two months ago on Jan. 20 against Florida Atlantic in the East Coast Challenge.
The Broncos were sluggish, perhaps affected by postponements in last weekend's match as well as Saturday's match due to inclement weather, as Fresno State (9-8) clinched the doubles point on Youssef Hassan and Zdenek Derkas' 6-3 win over Jesus Tapiador Barajas and Vasileios Iliopoulos on court No. 2. This after Xander Veys and Cagatay Soke beat Kamran Khan and Connor Garnett, 6-1 on court No. 3.
In singles play, Fresno State won the first three points to clinch the victory.
Derkas took care of Robert Seby 6-3, 6-0 on court No. 2, followed by Jeremy Moser's three set win over Barajas 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 on court No. 3. The Bulldogs clinched the win when Cern Erturk beat Garnett on court No. 4, 7-5, 6-2.
The lone win for the Broncos came on court No. 5 when Iliopolous beat Soke 6-3, 7-6.
Broncos' No.1 player Andrew Gu, who came into the match undefeated in singles play with a 8-0 record fell for the first time this season, losing to Mantas Bugailiskis in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Santa Clara next plays at 40th-ranked Oregon on Thursday.
