Men’s Tennis Posts Convincing Win, Sweeps Saint Mary’s on Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis followed up a close loss with a convincing West Coast Conference victory.

Jesus Tapiador Barajas, Connor Garnett and Vasileios Iliopoulos each won twice to help lead the Broncos to a 4-0 victory over Saint Mary's on Sunday.

Tapiador Barajas helped clinch the doubles point and had the deciding singles victory as Santa Clara (10-11, 1-1) snapped a four-match skid.

After Garnett defeated Chambers Easterling 6-0, 6-1 on court No. 4 and Iliopoulos downed Matis Bot 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 position to build a 3-0 lead, Tapiador Barajas ended the match with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Saint Mary's Nash Vollenweider.

At No. 3 doubles, Garnett and Kamran Khan set the tone with a 6-0 victory over Bot and Matthew Campana. Iliopoulos and Tapiador Barajas then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph against Easterling and Jacob Lagman on the second position.

The Broncos rebounded after dropping their WCC opener to Pacific, 4-3, on Saturday, a home match moved to Burlingame, California, due to weather.

The Gaels (3-11, 0-2) dropped their second-straight outing after falling 4-1 at San Francisco on Saturday.

Santa Clara will make its annual Northwest trip next week. The Broncos play at Portland on Thursday and then face Gonzaga on Saturday.
