Men’s Tennis Advances Five to Quarterfinals at Aggie Invitational
 
DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis had a solid opening day at the Aggie Invitational on Friday to kickoff its fall season, advancing five players to the singles quarterfinals, including three in the A Draw.  
 
All eight members of the Santa Clara roster were in action as the Broncos won all six of its first round singles matches in the non team-scored tournament with Andrew Gu and Santiago Hinojosa earning byes.  In the round of 16, Connor Garnett, Jesus Tapiador Barajas and Andrew Gu won its matches in the A Draw to move into the quarterfinals where Garnett and Tapiador Barajas will face one another.  
 
In the quarterfinals, Gu will play Timothy Sah of Stanford who beat Bronco freshman Arthur Neuhaus in the second round, 6-4, 6-2.  
 
In the B Draw, Hinojosa beat UC Davis' Alex Scemanenco on his home court, 6-3, 6-0, and Kamran Khan dispatched Issa Yoshida of Portland, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.  
 
All the quarterfinal singles matches will be played at 12:30 p.m. as Hinojosa will face Abhishek Bastola of Saint Mary's and Khan will play Sacramento State's Johannes Gjerdaker.
 
In the A Draw of doubles play, Garnett and Barajas beat Bastola and Daneil Krutik of Saint Mary's 8-7(1) for the lone Bronco doubles win on the day and will next play the No. 1 seed Dominic Barretto and Mert Zincirli of Cal.  Khan and Hinojosa will also play in the quarterfinals against Scemanenco and Daniel Landa of UC Davis after getting a first round bye. 
 
Doubles action resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m. PT at the Marya Welch Tennis Complex.
