SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a week off from tournament action, the Santa Clara men's tennis are back on the courts this week, playing at the ITA Fall Northwest Regional Championships in Seattle starting Thursday.
The five-day tournament will feature some of the top men's players from the west coast including from West Coast Conference schools Gonzaga, Pacific, Portland, Saint Mary's, and San Francisco, along with Pac-12 programs Cal, Oregon, Stanford and host Washington. The championships will be held at the Nordstrom Tennis Center (Oct. 11-13) and Seattle Tennis Club (Oct. 14-15). All matches played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center will be streamed live here.
Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Arizona (Nov. 7-11). The Northwest Regionals will be comprised of a 121-player draw in singles and a 58-team draw in doubles.
"After our fall opener at the Aggie Invitational, we got a chance to work on some of the things we identified. We worked a lot on doubles last week as that's one of the areas we're looking for some improvements. And coming into this week, it's a great opportunity to play some ranked players, some of the best players in our region and test themselves against players that they're going to face in the spring," said Broncos head coach Niall Angus.
Santa Clara's eight-player roster will each see singles and doubles action. In doubles, Arthur Neuhaus will be paired with Jesus Tapiador Barajas; Connor Garnett with Robert Seby; Vasileios Iliopoulos with Andrew Gu and Santiago Hinojosa with Kamran Khan, coming off a Aggie Invitational B Draw doubles championship in the fall opener.
Last season, Garnett won three matches to advance to the round of 16 in singles play.
