Two Men's Tennis Players Advance to Round of 16 at ITA Fall Northwest Regional Championships

SEATTLE – Santa Clara men's tennis senior Andrew Gu and freshman Arthur Neuhaus won two matches each on Friday to advance to the round of 16 of the 121-player singles draw at the ITA Fall Northwest Championships.  
 
After receiving an opening round bye, Gu handily defeated Adam Torocsik of Washington, 6-1, 6-0, on his home court at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Washington, the host school for the championships.  
 
In the round of 32 match, Gu took care of Portland State's Matteo Fortini, 6-2, 6-2, and will play in Saturday's round of 16 against Nicklas Oberg of Portland.  First serve is at 1:30 p.m.
 
Bronco newcomer Neuhaus beat Dominic Barretto of Cal, 6-4, 6-3 in his first match on Friday before facing Saint Mary's Damon Kesaris in the round of 32.  With Neuhaus up 4-0 in the first set, Kesaris retired to allow the Bronco freshman to punch his ticket to the round of 16 against Stanford's Timonth Sah.  First serve is at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

In other action, junior Jesus Tapiador Barajas beat Kento Perera of Stanford, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round but fell in three sets to to Jack Molly of Cal, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the third round.  
 
Robert Seby, Vasileios Iliopoulos and Connor Garnett each lost their second round matches.
 
Santa Clara did pick up a singles win when freshman Santiago Hinojosa won a singles consolation match defeating Eastern Washington's Manuel Balce, 6-3, 6-4.  
 
In doubles action, Gu and Iliopoulos lost its round of 16 match to No. 1 seed Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer of Washington, 8-3.
