SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara men's tennis was picked to finish in second place along with BYU and Loyola Marymount in the West Coast Conference by the league's 10 coaches. The Broncos, Cougars and the Lions each received 63 points in the poll, behind San Diego's 80. Santa Clara collected one first place vote to the Toreros' eight. Pepperdine also received one first place vote.
The Broncos field an experienced team with four seniors (Connor Garnett, Andrew Gu, Kamran Khan and Robert Seby) and two juniors (Vasileios Iliopoulos, Jesus Tapiador Barajas) returning from the eight-member squad which finished fifth in the conference to advance to the WCC Tournament last season. Santa Clara added two newcomers in freshman Santiago Hinojosa and Arthur Neuhaus.
Gu, a senior, was named Preseason All-WCC after being named All-WCC Singles First Team last season and to the All-Conference Singles Second Team, two seasons ago. Last season, Gu played the entire year on court one in both singles and doubles posting a singles record of 10-6 in dual match play including 2-2 in WCC matches while going 12-7 in doubles with a 4-4 conference record.
Santa Clara kicked off its 2019 dual match season on Tuesday night, falling to No. 10 Stanford, 5-0.
