Men’s Tennis Lose Conference Opener at BYU on Saturday
PROVO, Utah – Santa Clara men's tennis were swept by BYU, 4-0, in the West Coast Conference opener on Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Courts. 
 
BYU (6-2, 1-0 WCC) got off to a fast start when the reigning WCC Doubles Team of the Week duo of Mateo Vereau and Matthew Pearce blanked Connor Garnett and Robert Seby, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu clinched the doubles point for the Cougars taking down Andrew Gu and Jesus Tapiador Barajas, 6-3.  
 
Santa Clara (4-3, 0-1 WCC) attempted to change the momentum in singles play, however, Hill put the Cougars up 2-0 with a straight set win over Tapiador Barajas, 6-1, 6-2.  
 
The Broncos battled with three, 3-set matches at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles spots but Vereau beat Garnett, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, on court three to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.  
 
The match clincher came at the hands of Ben Gajardo who took down Arthur Neuhaus, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles before the three-set matches at No. 2 and 4 singles could be concluded.  
 
NEXT UP
After playing four straight matches away from home, the Broncos return to Degheri Tennis Center to host UC Davis on Feb. 16 and Nevada on Feb. 17.
