Men's Tennis Rolls Past UC Davis

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The lack of recent practice time due to days of rain in the Bay Area did not seem to limit the effectiveness of Santa Clara men's tennis.

The Broncos put together a dominating singles performance to cruise to a 5-2 win over UC Davis (6-2) on Sunday in a match that was originally set for Saturday.

"It was a difficult week with the weather, having to come back in and out and having to change up practice times to get some quality court time in," Santa Clara head coach Niall Angus said. "But the guys did a good job being professional about it.

Santa Clara (5-3) won five of the singles matches, including four in straight sets.

Leading 2-1, Robert Seby and Vasileios Iliopoulos clinched the win for the Broncos who snapped a two-game skid.

Playing at No. 5 singles, Seby downed Arjith Jayaraman 6-3, 6-4 and then Iliopoulos closed out his 6-3, 6-4 victory over Chethan Swanson on court four just moments later.

The Broncos also had singles wins from Andrew Gu, Connor Garnett and Arthur Neuhaus.

"It was important to get the bad taste out of our mouth from the Utah trip," Angus said. "The guys did a really good job playing a tough UC Davis team. We beat them 4-3 last year in a really tight match so this shows our improvement from last year to this year, especially in singles. We still have work to do in doubles, but a nice bounce back win."

A win by the duo of Daniel Landa and Alex Scemanenco over Iliopoulos and Neuhaus clinched the doubles point for the Aggies.

• The Broncos were scheduled to play Nevada on Sunday, but that match is rescheduled for March 3.
