Wong Continues to Shine at Singles No. 1 Spot

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team lost 5-2 to No. 71 Brigham Young. Jay Wong continued to see success in singles and remains unbeated this season. He won his fourth straight singles match at the No. 1 position over the Cougars Jonathan Sanchez, 6-1, 6-4.

"Jay continues to play a great game," said Coach Derek Mills. "He was able to stay strong against one of his toughest opponents this season and come up with the win."

Senthil Chidambaram got the other singles win of the day over BYU's Cassidy Mears, 6-7, 7-6, 1-0, in a thrilling match that ended with a supertiebreaker. After falling in the first set, Chidambaram was able to rally back behind the cheers of the crowd and his teammates to get the win.

In doubles action, Wong and Steven Benvenuto upset the Cougars Mears and Sanchez at the No. 1 spot in a 9-7 victory.

"The guys played hard against BYU," said Mills. "We were able to get some wins over a very talented squad that is nationally ranked."

The Broncos are on the road for their next match against No. 74 Fresno State on Saturday February 16, at 12:00 p.m.
