Men's Tennis Spilts this Weekend at Home

The Santa Clara men's tennis team spilt its home matches this weekend, falling to UAB, 5-2, on Saturday before charging back on Sunday to defeat Northern Colorado 7-0. The men move to 3-6 on the season. The team will take the week off for final exams and then travel to San Luis Obispo to play Cal Poly on Sun., March 22 at 1 pm.

Highlights on the weekend included Jay Wong improving his No. 1 singles record this season to 9-4. In addition, Bronco senior John Iwanski won his first-ever collegiate match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andre Lepine of Northern Colorado.

"We are really proud of John in winning his first collegiate match. We look forward to more," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills "The team played well today after a disappointing loss to a talented UAB team yesterday. I hope we work hard this week to finish off the quarter strong this week with finals and then get ready to play at Cal Poly on Sunday."

Since UAB, 6-6, lost to Cal on Tuesday, the Blazers reeled off three straight victories against West Coast Conference teams in Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara. Northern Colorado falls to 1-14 on the year.

On Saturday, UAB won the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Broncos were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles as Jay Wong and Hirakawa-Wong beat Slawomir Szeremeta and Dennis Ehrlich.

Jay Wong won, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles over the Blazers' Slawomir Szeremeta. At No. 2 singles, Kyle Dandan rallied to down UAB's Alex Emery, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2). Santa Clara fell at the No. 3 - No. 6 singles spots to fall to UAB in the match.

On Sunday vs. Northern California, Santa Clara won the doubles point with three straight wins in doubles, highlighted by a 9-8 No. 1 doubles win by Wong and Hirakawa-Wong; a 8-4 No. 2 doubles win by Kyle Dandan and Tommy Hicks; and an 8-4 No. 3 doubles win by Charlie Hicks and Iwanski.

Wong notched his ninth win at No. 1 singles this spring this season, winning 6-0, 6-1 vs. Calix Van-Lier. All six singles wins for the Broncos were two-set wins.
