Men's Tennis Edges Out UAB 4-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 57 Santa Clara Men's tennis edged past UAB this afternoon with a final score of 4-3. SCU seniors Brian Brogan and Jay Wong came up with big wins at No. 1 and 2 singles to give the Broncos the final 4-3 victory. Santa Clara improves to 8-4

"Today's match was a really long match. A lot of our guys stepped up and grabbed huge points for us," said SCU head coach Derek Mills. "We got off to a really good start in doubles and our seniors, Brian Brogan and Jay Wong, gave us two big points in singles to give us the win."

In doubles, the pair Nicolas Vinel and Andrew Kells and freshman duo Tom Pham and Eugene Muchynski grabbed back-to-back wins at the number 2 and 3 doubles positions, respectively. Vinel and Kells took a 8-3 win over UAB's David Zimmerman and Thomas Petrich while Pham and Muchynski faced Alex Emery and Tyrone Ewels and came out with an 8-5 win to take the doubles point.

The match tightened up on the singles side of play as UAB took three straight wins at the No. 3,4, and 5 singles spots over Kells, Vinel, and Pham, respectively. After falling behind against UAB's Petrich at No. 6 singles, Muchynski came back and won in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. To seal the win for the Broncos, Brogan defeated Danny Manlow in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Wong also won in three sets over David Zimmerman 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The Broncos are back in action next Tuesday, March 23 as they host Eastern Washington at 12:00 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center.
