Broncos See Success at the ITA Northwest Regionals

Seattle, Wash. - Three Santa Clara men's tennis players participated in the ITA Northwest Regionals Friday. Representing the Broncos in Seattle are Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong, Blane Shields and Jay Wong. All three won their singles matches and will play in the round of 32 on day two, while the doubles team of Shields and Wong has yet to play. The Regionals features 12 teams from the Northwest and some of the top of the players in the country.

Junior Hirakawa-Wong will see action in the third round after a strong showing in day one. After a first round bye, Hirakawa-Wong defeated Nevada's Benjamin David in a three set battle, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Shields will also play in the third round after a first round two set win, over fellow conference rival University of San Francisco's Rainer Nachbauer, 7-6, 7-5. In the second round Shields defeated Xavier Barajas-Smith of Sacramento State in another two set win, 6-1, 6-3.

Rounding out the trio is Wong, who will also play in the third round after defeating Sacramento State's Holden Ching in two sets, 6-1, 6-4, and a first round bye. He will also see doubles action on Saturday, with partner Shields.
