"I'm really proud of how Andrew played today," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "Andrew and Dennis played a great match. Both players were serving big, and Andrew was finally able to break Lin in the second and third sets. We had a really nice crowd and it was a fun match to watch."
Kells first defeated Cal's number one seed, Nick Andrews, to go on to face fellow Bronco Jay Wong in the second round. Wong fell to Kells 6-3, 6-1, who then grabbed a victory fourth seeded Walker Kehrer of Stanford (6-4, 6-3).
Freshman Grant Fleming and Tom Pham had solid performances this weekend for the Broncos. Fleming fell to Stanford's top freshman recruit Walker Kehrer 6-3, 6-2 after beating the Golden Bears' Sky Lovill in three sets. Pham dropped his first match to Saint Mary's number one seed Lucas Tirelli 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
SCU entered two teams to compete in the doubles bracket. Sophomores Andrew Kells and Nicolas Vinel defeated Cal's Zach Gilbert and Sky Lovill 8-4 in the first round then fell to Stanford's Walker Kehrer and Dennis Lin 8-5 in the second round. Freshman Nick Buckley and Tom Pham fell in the first round of doubles play to Kehrer and Lin 8-6.
The Broncos are back in action or the last time this fall as they travel this weekend to Moraga, Calif. for the Saint Mary's Gael Classic.
