Men's Tennis to Face UCSC in Dual Season Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Santa Clara men's tennis team will open the 2009 dual season Sat., Jan. 31, hosting the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center after being rescheduled on Jan. 24 due to rain.

The veteran Broncos will take on a highly-ranked Santa Cruz team, with five seniors and four juniors.

"This Santa Cruz team is senior-laden and has a lot of experience. They are going to want to take it to us; we are going to have to come out and match their energy," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills.

In their last match vs. UC Santa Cruz, the Broncos pulled out a hard-fought 4-2 victory. Juniors Jay Wong, Steven Benvenuto, and seniors Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and Senthil Chidambaram each tallied singles and doubles points to win the match.
