Santa Clara Takes on No. 71 BYU This Weekend at Home

Feb. 6, 2008

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team will host No. 71 Brigham Young University this Saturday February 9, at 12:00 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos look to bounce back from their 5-2 loss to Loyola Marymount and stop the Cougars three game winning streak. BYU will face Stanford on Friday and then travel to Santa Clara the following day, on their short Northern California road trip.

This season sophomore Jay Wong has continued to play successfully, as the only undefeated player in singles with a 3-0 record. Wong has taken command of the No. 1 singles position, after playing as high as the No. 2 spot last season.

"Jay is playing great this season," said Coach Derek Mills. "He continues to develop into a great tennis player and has battled hard this season. Not only does he play smart, but he knows how to stay composed, as two of his singles matches have gone into three sets."

The Broncos have been working hard this week in practice to prepare for the Cougars, who are their first ranked opponent of the season.

"Facing BYU will be a challenge, but one the guys are ready to take on," said Mills. "They continually come out and work hard, and have been able to maximize practice this week due to the better weather conditions."

Santa Clara looks to earn their second win of the season this weekend at home.
