Broncos Set to Take On USF in WCC Opener

Feb. 9, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team opens WCC play this Wednesday, February 11 at No. 67 University of San Francisco. The Broncos are coming off of a 6-1 duals season opener win versus UC Santa Cruz and are looking for continued success at USF.

Last season, SCU (1-0) fell to the Dons (0-4) in two dual season meetings. On April 2, 2008, despite strong doubles play from duo Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and Jay Wong and a tough singles performance from Jay Wong, the Broncos fell 6-1. In their first meeting in February 2008, Santa Clara dropped the decision 7-0.

Scouting USF San Francisco has struggled this dual season, going 0-4 since dropping their season opener versus Portland 4-3 on January 17. The Dons most recently faced off against No. 73 Nebraska in Las Vegas, dropping the decision, 6-1.

Despite a difficult start, USF has seen consistent strong performances from its returning players. Seniors Mitch Del Rosario and Tommy Tu, along with juniors Asaf Cohen and Einar Hart have been an anchor on the team this season.

First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. this Wednesday, February 11, at San Francisco's Olympic Club.
