SCU to Host UC Davis and Gonzaga This Weekend

Feb. 25, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - This weekend the Santa Clara men's tennis team will host UC Davis and Gonzaga. After a hard road trip at BYU, the Broncos, (1-2), are looking forward to returning home and kicking off the West Coast Conference dual season. SCU will play Davis on Feb. 28 at 3 p.m., and will start WCC dual play versus Gonzaga on March 1 at 9 a.m. Both matches will be played at the Degheri Tennis Center.

"Right now we are hoping that the weather holds out and that we can get both of these matches in. This is the third time we had to reschedule Davis and it may be the last opportunity we have to play them," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills. "We're looking forward to playing Gonzaga and starting conference matches. We had two good matches against them last year and this will be a good chance to see where we stand in the WCC."

Saturday's match versus Davis (1-5) is long over due, as inclement weather postponed the original match on Jan. 24 and the rescheduled match, which was set for Feb. 15. In their last meeting with the Aggies on Jan. 19, 2008, the Broncos dropped the decision, 4-1. Junior Jay Wong tallied the one point for SCU in a singles win against current Davis senior Michael Reiser, defeating him 6-1, 6-4.

On Sunday, the Broncos will take on the Bulldogs of Gonzaga (5-4) to open their WCC dual season. Last season, SCU met Gonzaga twice in dual play. In their first meeting, Santa Clara defeated the Zags in a thrilling 4-3 victory on Feb. 23, 2008. The teams met for the second time in the third round of the WCC Championships, where SCU fell to the Bulldogs, 4-2.

Gonzaga is coming off of a 6-1 loss to Eastern Washington and travels to the Mission Campus in the midst of a four-match WCC road trip. The Zags will take on San Francisco and Saint Mary's before visiting SCU.
