Three Bronco Men's Tennis Players Head to the Bulldog Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- This weekend three members of the Santa Clara men's tennis team will compete in the Fresno State Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif. Participating in the tournament are Blane Shields, Jay Wong and Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong.

Shields comes into the tournament after competing in the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., where he won in the first round and was eliminated in the second. Wong also participated in the tournament and reached the third round, after a first round bye and a second round win. Both Shields and Wong will play in singles and doubles this weekend.

Also heading down to Fresno is Hirakawa-Wong, who is coming off a 9-3 singles record and a 4-3 doubles record for the 2006-07 season. This will be Hirakawa-Wong's first tournament of the fall 2007 season.

"This will be a great opportunity for us," said new head coach Derek Mills. "We will be able to see some teams we will face this season and Blane, Jay and Kenzo are ready to compete. We have worked hard this past week in practice preparing ourselves, and the team collectively is working hard to step up their game. Players who did not play as much last season will have starting roles this year, and they all seem ready for the challenge. I anticipate us having a good season, as long as everyone can stay healthy and focused. We want to stay in the national rankings, as the team was last year, and our main objective is to play in the NCAA tournament."
