Men's Water Polo Opens Season with Loss to Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team opened the 2001 season on the road with a 17-7 loss to the University of Pacific this afternoon at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton.

The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter. Jared Pendergarass scored two of his game-high and career-high five goals in the second quarter as Pacific outscored the Broncos 5-0 in the period to take a 9-2 halftime lead.

Chris Nowak scored the second of his two goals in the third period as the Tigers scored five straight goals to take a 14-3 lead with 2:42 left. Brady Norvall and Mark Stewart each tallied two goals for the Tigers.

Freshman Nick Takahashi, and seniors Jay Moorhead and Daniel O'Connell each scored two goals to lead Santa Clara.

The Broncos return to pool on Friday against Brigham Young Hawaii in San Diego before taking part in UC San Diego's Triton Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
