Men's Water Polo Defeats BYU-Hawaii in Overtime

Sept. 7, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Jay Moorhead scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to give the Santa Clara University men's water polo team a 12-11 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii this afternoon in San Diego. With their first win of the season, the Broncos improve to 1-1 overall.

With the contest tied at 10 after regulation, Moorhead scored his match-high sixth goal of the afternoon on a fast break in the second overtime, receiving the pass from sophomore Logan Gee, whose steal created the winning margin.

Junior defender Dan Figoni and freshman Nick Takahashi added three goals each to round out the Bronco scoring.

Freshman Peter Moore recorded 12 saves as the first-half goalkeeper for the Broncos while sophomore Gareth Owens added four blocks in the third and fourth quarters. Moore returned to the match in overtime.

"This game might not have been as close as it was had we not missed so many opportunities," head coach Steve Hanson said. "We turned the ball over way too many times and we couldn't finish on offense. When we were patient and didn't rush through our system, we dominated. That's really a positive thing to see so early in the season. If we correct those mistakes, we'll go from being a solid team to being a great team by the end of the season."

The Broncos remain in San Diego for the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. Santa Clara opens tournament play against Loyola Marymount at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday followed by a 1 p.m. match against Whittier. Competition for Sunday will be based on Saturday's results.
