Water Polo Splits at Triton Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo fell to Loyola Marymount 11-4 but defeated Whittier 14-5 to open play at the San Diego Invitational this afternoon. The Broncos improve to 2-2 on the season.

The Broncos held a tough LMU squad to a 5-3 halftime score. Knowing the Broncos had a long day ahead, head coach Steve Hanson said he rested his starters most of the third quarter, when the Lions attacked for four goals. Sophomore Logan Gee led the Bronco scoring with two goals while sophomore Kenny Flanagan and senior Jay Moorhead added one goal each. Sophomore Gareth Owens played in goal during the game.

In the victory over Whittier, scoring was spread across the Broncos roster. Moorhead added thee goals, while Flanagan, freshman Nick Takahashi, senior Dan O'Connell, Gee, sophomore J.P. Doucette, freshman Mark Oda and senior Bryan Failing added one goal each. Freshman Peter Moore starred in goal for the afternoon match.

"We're much stronger right now than we were at this point last season," Hanson said, "which means we're only going to get better.

The Broncos close out in San Diego for the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, on Sunday, facing Redlands at 1 p.m., followed by a 4:45 p.m. game against an opponent yet to be determined.
