Water Polo Falls to Sixth-Ranked Cal Baptist

Sept. 29, 2001

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Senior Jay Moorhead scored five goals to lead the Santa Clara University men's water polo team in a 17-13 losing effort against sixth-ranked Cal Baptist at the Slugfest Tournament this evening, hosted by UC Santa Cruz. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 5-3 on the season.

"I wish we had them on our schedule again, it was an evenly-matched contest," head coach Steve Hanson said. "It was our first real trial-by-fire in three weeks. I think our guys got a little rusty. They played well and hard, but they rushed themselves in the second half."

The contest was tied at seven goals apiece at the half, but the Broncos were outscored by three goals in the third quarter. Hanson said his team began rushing on offense, which in turn created some transition goals for Cal Baptist.

Freshman Nick Takahashi added three goals, while freshman Grant Allison and junior Dan Figoni added two apiece. Senior Dan O'Connell registered one goal to round out Bronco scoring.

Freshman Peter Moore played the whole match in goal for SCU and posted seven blocks.

The Broncos will conclude tournament action on Sunday against ninth-ranked UC San Diego at 11:50 and No. 17 Air Force at 5:15 p.m.
