Men's Water Polo Tops UC Santa Cruz 9-7

Oct. 7, 2001

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Senior Jay Moorhead recorded five goals to lead the Santa Clara University men's water polo team in a 9-7 defeat of UC Santa Cruz this morning. With the victory, Santa Clara evens its record at 6-6 on the season while UCSC, ranked second in the country at the Division III level, falls to 8-10.

The Broncos opened the match with a 3-0 run in the first quarter, and later held a 5-2 halftime advantage, but allowed UC Santa Cruz to creep back in and tie the match at 7 goals apiece in the fourth quarter before the Broncos were able to post two goals in the contest's final three minutes.

"We controlled the game," SCU head coach Steve Hanson said. "But silly mistakes like the ones we made yesterday against UC Davis allowed our opponent to creep back in."

In addition to Moorhead, one goal each was scored by the Broncos' Grant Allison, Kenny Flanagan and Dan Figoni. Statistics were not available on who scored the team's ninth goal.

Additionally, the Bronco goalkeeper tallied eight blocks.

The Broncos return to the pool next weekend at the Northern California Invitational, hosted by Stanford University October 13-14. Santa Clara opens the tournament against host Stanford on Saturday at 9:15 a.m., and will continue play that afternoon at UC Irvine or UC San Diego. If the Broncos fall in the morning match, they will play at 1:45 p.m., if they win, they will compete again at 3 p.m.
