Water Polo Defeats Cal Maritime 26-6

Oct. 30, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team defeated the California Maritime Academy 26-6 this evening in the Leavey Pool to improve to 7-12 on the season.

Senior Jay Moorhead, sophomore Logan Gee and freshman Grant Allison led the Broncos with four goals each, while sophomore Dan Figoni and freshman Nick Takahashi added three scores apiece.

The Broncos opened the first quarter with two goals each by Moorhead, Takahashi and a solo score by senior Dan O'Connell. A penalty score by senior Bryan Failing put SCU ahead 6-2 at the end of the period.

Cal Maritime scored three goals in the second, with two by Michael Glanz, the first a power play goal to cut SCU's lead to five at 8-3. But on their next possession, miscommunication left Cal Maritime tossing a ball into open water. Moorhead was able to grab the ball and break down the pool for the score. On the next play, Takahashi scored and then registered an assist on sophomore J.P Doucette's only goal of the game to put the Broncos up 11-4. Figoni closed out scoring for the half with a goal from eight meters.

Santa Clara continued the offensive flurry with eight goals in the third, including one by sophomore Kenny Flanagan off a cross-pool shot from freshman Mark Oda. Cal Maritime was kept off the scoreboard for the full period, but was able to add a goal in the fourth quarter by Justin Diesslin.

Broncos sophomore netminder Gareth Owens registered three saves in the first half, earning his fifth win of the season. Freshman Peter Moore took over in the third quarter and posted four blocks.

The Broncos return to action this weekend with two key WWPA matches, the first is at UC Davis on Saturday at noon. Santa Clara will then return to the mission campus to close the home season at Leavey Pool, hosting UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at noon.
