Men's Water Polo Finishes Season with Win

Nov. 18, 2001

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team conclued its 2001 season with a 10-9 victory over UC Santa Cruz in the seventh place match of the Western Water Polo Association Championships Sunday in Los Angeles, Calif.

Santa Clara had a balanced scoring attack on the day led by Jay Moorhead, Dan Figoni and Kenny Flanagan who each scored two goals. Grant Allison, Logan Gee, Nick Takahashi and Dan O'Connell each added one goal on the day for the Broncos. Defensively Peter Moore made 12 saves in goal to preserve the narrow margin of victory.

"We salvaged a little of what we had lost over the last two days with our victory today," said head coach Steve Hanson. "I am happy about this victory. A win to finish your season always helps the digestion of the fact that the season is in fact over."

With Sunday's victory over the Banana Slugs, Santa Clara has now defeated UC Santa Cruz three times on the year. The Broncos finish the season with a 10-14 overall record.

Moorhead finishes the season with a team-high 58 goals on the season. Figoni and Takahashi were second and third on the team with 35 and 33 goals, respectively.
