Men's Water Polo Tops La Verne 8-6

Sept. 13, 2003

LA VERNE, Calif. - Senior Dan Figoni led the Santa Clara University men's water polo team to an 8-6 victory over Division III seventh-ranked La Verne this afternoon at the Inland Empire Classic, hosted by the University of Redlands.

The Broncos are now 2-0 on the season after an 8-3 victory over Division III 10th-ranked Chapman earlier today.

"It was a good, close game," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "No one led by more than two goals the entire match."

Grant Allison, Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz and Whit Gilfillan added one goal apiece to complete the Bronco scoring. Wilbur also pointed out a stellar defensive effort by freshman Kevin Starry, who tallied three steals and drew a four-meter. Goaltender Peter Moore added 21 saves.

"Peter was a wall in the cage," Wilbur added. "He played a huge role in our victory today.

"La Verne was a team we lost two twice last season, so they were a good team for us to beat today," he continued. "But we have to see them again next week in Santa Cruz, so it will most likely be another good test for us."

The Broncos remain at the tournament and will play Division III sixth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Santa Clara will close out the weekend against its host, playing Division I No. 20 Redlands at 2:45 p.m.
