SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara Broncos had their five game winning streak snapped Sunday morning in a 13-6 loss to No. 8 ranked UC Davis. The Broncos (5-9) are now 3-0 in WWPA conference play.

It was a very physical game in which UC Davis took full advantage of their size and strength. Throughout the first quarter, the Broncos were knocking on the door as they tried to get on the board. Davis jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Santa Clara got things going. Jack Wall had a shot cleared off the line, and another was denied by a nice effort from the Davis goalie. Finally, with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter, Wall got the Broncos on the board.

In the second quarter, though, things went down hill as Davis put up six goals, and never looked back. Santa Clara tried to counter, and freshman Liam Farrell had a spectacular goal called back, and then another deflect off the post. The Broncos went into halftime trailing 9-2.

Behind a very large crowd at the Malley Pool, the Broncos refused to go away. In the third quarter, Tommy Hendrickson put one away for Santa Clara, and in the fourth quarter, the Broncos did what they have done all season - score goals. Santa Clara got three more goals, from Jack Wall, Jeff Welch and Daniel Soares, and held Davis to only one goal in the fourth quarter to account for the final score of 13-6.

It was a rough day in the cage for junior Jon Young. Despite a stong effort by Santa Clara on defense, Davis' strong physical play allowed them to take advantage of every opportunity afforded to them. Additionally, the small size of Malley Pool did not allow Santa Clara to thwart Davis' physical play with their own speed.

Next weekend, Santa Clara will be at the Claremont Convergence Tournament, and will face four WWPA Conference opponents. Friday, October 6th the Broncos will face Chapman University at Claremont. They will then travel to Pomona to face Occidental College Friday afternoon. Saturday, Santa Clara will remain in Pomona and face University of La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer College.
