Nov. 5, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif - The No. 17 ranked Santa Clara Broncos were in Berkeley, Calif. to face the Cal Bears on Sunday afternoon, and unfortunately, the Bears demonstrated why they are ranked No. 2, handing the Broncos an 18-8 defeat. The Broncos are now 13-12 overall.

After playing a strong game against conference rival UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, Santa Clara managed to string together a few spots of brilliance, but against a No. 2 team, it wasn't enough. Billy Gorin had another solid effort, scoring two goals and drawing a 5M penalty shot. On the weekend, Gorin scored four goals for the Broncos. Sophomore Jack Wall had a goal and two assists in Sunday's match, and had two kickouts drawn to bring his weekend goal-scoring total to four as well.

Freshman Mike Sorgenfrei scored his third goal of the weekend, and freshman Liam Farrell, Matt Adler, Jeff Welch and Tommy Hendrickson each contributed a goal in the loss. Robert Callahan and Jon Young split time in the cage, with each recording four saves.

Next weekend, the Broncos will travel to Stockton, Calif. to take on Pacific on Saturday, November 11th at 3:00 p.m., and then return to the Bay Area Sunday, November 12th and face Stanford at noon in Palo Alto, Calif.. Next weekend's matches will be the Broncos final tune up before the WWPA Championships, which are now just under two weeks away, and will begin Friday, November 17th in Pomona, Calif..
