Santa Clara Falls to No. 4 Stanford 13-5

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Santa Clara concluded their regular season Sunday, dropping a 13-5 decision to No. 4 ranked Stanford. With the loss, Santa Clara sits at 13-14 overall, but with a commanding 11-3 record in the Western Water Polo Association.

Stanford had a strong first quarter, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and then a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, down 8-1, Santa Clara started to turn things around. In the third quarter, Santa Clara managed two goals, holding Stanford to only one. But in the fourth, Santa Clara's two goals weren't enough, as Stanford added four more goals to account for the final 13-5 margin.

Broncos leading scorer Jack Wall had a pair of goals, a steal, two kickouts drawn and a 5M penalty shot drawn. Tommy Hendrickson and Tommy Kelly each contributed a goal of their own and Mike Detoy, added a goal and four kickouts drawn. Robert Callahan started in the cage and made six blocks and allowed nine goals before Jon Young replaced him. Young had four blocks and gave up four goals.

Santa Clara now heads to the WWPA Championships in Pomona, Calif., which begin Thursday, November 16th. Santa Clara holds a No. 4 seed, which means they will play Air Force, a team they defeated two weeks ago in Davis, Calif. by a score of 12-8.
